"I wanted to but my rent was due" by PQHAÜS

I used to believe my dreams were destinations. Clear places that existed somewhere ahead of me, waiting to be reached. I thought if I was disciplined enough, patient enough, resilient enough, I would eventually arrive at the life I had rehearsed in my mind so many times. The future felt structured. Earnable. Predictable.
But life rarely unfolds in straight lines. It drifts. It interrupts. It alters direction quietly, sometimes without drama, sometimes without explanation. There were plans I carried for years that dissolved almost casually. There were versions of myself that worked toward something with certainty, only to wake up one day unsure if that certainty even belonged to me anymore.
What unsettles me is not just that some dreams do not come true. It is that they remain suspended. They do not disappear. They stay somewhere in the background, like rooms in a house I no longer live in but still remember clearly. I can walk through them in my mind. I can still feel the texture of what I thought my life would look like. And sometimes that memory feels heavier than reality itself.
There is a quiet grief in accepting that not every desire is meant to materialize. Not because we failed. Not because we were not worthy. But because life moves independently of our blueprints. It has its own timing, its own indifference. It does not consult us before changing course.
I am not trying to romanticize that. Some days it simply feels unfair. Some days it feels like standing at a train platform watching something leave without you. You cannot chase it. You cannot rewind it. You just stand there, adjusting to the silence that follows.
Maybe that is what growing up really is. Not achieving every dream, but learning how to sit with the ones that remain out of reach. Learning how to continue forward while carrying unfinished versions of yourself. The dreams do not vanish. They soften at the edges. They become part of you in a different way.
I still dream. Not because I believe everything will happen, but because dreaming feels human. And even if some dreams remain distant, even if life keeps turning without warning, I am still here. Still moving. Still becoming someone I did not plan for.
